Virginia McFrederick was a woman ahead of her time. Born May 26, 1918, Virginia spent most of her life in Cleveland, graduating from West High in 1937. A voracious reader and dogged in her quest for knowledge, Virginia dedicated her life to education and the pursuit of meaningful experience. She was a single-mother to her son Nelson while also carving out a successful publishing career, working at Penton Publishing for 30 years. She returned to school as an evening student, graduating cum laude from CSU with an English degree, and spent a lifetime exploring the world as an avid traveler.
Ultimately, Virginia's life was one of hard work, adventure, and unshakeable belief in the power of education. The end of her life reflected these values.
Virginia left a generous bequest to Cleveland State University, specifically the Michael Schwartz Library. Her gift will facilitate library renovations and establish a permanent endowment to support all aspects of the library's operations. It is an extraordinary donation, one that will benefit the University and her students for generations to come.
Survived by grandchildren, great grandchildren and even great-great grandchildren, Virginia will long be remembered by her family and friends and by countless CSU students who will benefit from her singular generosity.
